It's interesting how humans tend to look to faith so often. And it's also funny how they see it affecting their lives.
There is a common line among all kinds of faith, they're based on retribution. This means, basically, that faith is nothing more than a way of asking for unseen, unstoppable forces for help. Whatever it is they pray for, they're always in need of something.
Fishers pray for a good hunt, soldiers pray for victory in the battlefield. No matter where, faith is based on asking for things, getting them, and then showing your appreciation. Obviously enough, this last part is a lot less important, specially based on some beliefs saying that the unseen forces will do anything they please, no matter who or what is asked.
And that, once again, puts faith in a very awkward position. Since the unseen will just do whatever it feels like doing, what's the point of asking for anything, anyway? I will be very happy if someone can point me ANY logical explaining for this, since I haven't been able to find one. And, please, make sure your point has actual logic behind it. Otherwise, I'll just ignore it, like I did with the so many people I've talked to about this kind of subject.
Now, back at the showing appreciation part. This is very interesting. You see, since the forces are unseen and no one has any proof of any direct communication with them throughout history, there's basically no standards for what the unseen would actually see fit as a token of gratitude. Or, if they even see the need of such a thing. I mean, they're supposed to be a whole lot greater than us mere mortals, so what is it we could offer them that would ever prove useful, or even worthwhile?
Faith also serves as a comforting certainty. There are many things in the Universe that haven't been unraveled by our science, and they'll probably remain there for a really long time, possibly way beyond our brief existence.
Faith provides a comfortable feeling, the safety of having an answer for everything. It gives you a simple explanation for the unknown, tells you a relatively plausible course of passage from life to death, all kinds of useless ways of thinking that should have been already extinguished by history.
I mean, what's the point of living if we have an answer for everything? Mankind would be better wiping itself out of the planet.
To live is to learn. Everyday we learn something new. Every breath taken is a new experience. If that is taken away from us, what do we have left?

The truth about god
There is no god.
As well as it's impossible to either prove or revoke the hypothesis of a superior, creating entity, it's also impossible to believe that a childish, spoiled and egocentric being is actually superior.
Let's think carefully, for a moment. People say that god is all-forgiving, yet, according to the so-called "holy scriptures", he's ordered mass genocide, for people who supposedly were beyond salvation. Which, by the way, goes against the "do not kill" law he is said to have created way before that incident.
Not just that, he'll also torture forever the non-believers. It doesn't matter how they behave, if they don't believe in god, they're obviously evil far beyond recovery and therefore cannot ever be forgiven.
Do you have any idea of how long forever is? It's just too long. Seriously. It'd be easier if god just cleansed the soul and gave it to another being, who maybe could make better use of it.
Anyway, while there may yes be a real entity who created universe, it's impossible to believe that such entity would be so human. Face it, you're probably a better person than god is.
